Laundry Material Testing
Laundry facilities participating in Laundry Compliance certification programs are continually tested to ensure the highest degree of quality control is maintained. There are several organizations who test laundered goods in a lab to ensure products are safe for use.
The two most prevalent organizations are the TRSA (Textile Rental Services Association) and the Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC).
The HLAC has a single accreditation and is focused primarily on the healthcare industry. The TRSA has several certifications which have different requirements and meet specific industry needs. In addition to the primary “Hygienically Clean” certification standard which is a good idea for every commercial laundry, medical facilities looking to achieve the “Hygienically Clean Healthcare” standard are required to meet stricter standards for the prevention for spreading blood-borne illnesses. For companies serving restaurants and food service facilities, they offer a “Hygienically Clean Food Service” standard which is tailored to prevent illness from cross contamination and food-borne illnesses.
“Hygienically Clean” Standards (HC) Material Testing
Within the Laundry Compliance standards, linens are tested against the microbial testing standards. Materials are tested upon the initial qualification of the certification as well as twice a year for continual quality control. Plant facilities are tested against the following laundering safety requirements:
- Cross contamination
- Final pH
- Extraction
- Drying
- Hazard communication
- Trienial quality control
- Minimum performance, USP 61, CFU per square decimeter of ≤20
“Hygienically Clean – Healthcare” Standards (HCH) Material Testing
In addition to the standard Hygienically Clean certification testing, healthcare-certified laundry facilities are tested for the following:
- Bloodborne pathogens
- Hepatitis B vaccine declination
“Hygienically Clean – Food Service” Standards (HCFS) Material Testing
In addition to the standard Hygienically Clean certification testing, food service-certified laundry services are tested for the following:
- Cross-contamination prevention
- Pest control plan
- Cart liners
- Drying
- Garment processing service
- Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
- Operational flow chart confirmation
- ATP testing of hard surfaces
- Minimum performance, USP 61, CFU per square decimeter of ≤50
